BEDFORD-STUYVESANT
Community School District 16 is one of three community school district in Brooklyn that cover Bedford-Stuyvesant, however we consider District 16 to be the heart of the neighborhood.
Street names in Bedford-Stuyvesant hold historical significance; streets such as Bainbridge, Chauncey, Decatur and MacDonough are named after naval heroes from several wars including the War of 1812. History tells us that in the early 1800's two separate communities, Stuyvesant Heights and Bedford came together to form what we now know as Bedford-Stuyvesant or "Bed-Stuy." It is a community with an eclectic touch and is historically known for its beautiful brownstones and townhouses.
Currently, Bedford-Stuyvesant is a community experiencing change. As one walks through the community you can see and hear the "buzz" of renovation, new business, and changing demographics which provide a new backdrop for the growing community. There is a renewed demand for schools and community organizations to meet the needs of a growing population and a diverse community.
